Jesse had spent the days leading up in leisured activity, jostling between sketching his TV pilot and slacking through his day job. He’d finished his job for Brian, finding the ideas easier since he cared less about them, and when he’d reached a satisfactory end point he’d sent along the script to Lee, nervously refreshing his email waiting for that response to arrive.

“It won’t blind any queens,” Lee said on the phone to Jesse, who was barefoot on his balcony at the Riviera Palm Springs.

“Is it workable?” Jesse asked sadly, cutting to it through the unexpected sting of his response.

“I’m not sure,” Lee said, on speakerphone in the backyard at The Chateau. Jesse imagined him filing his nails on a chaise or leaning on the edge of the pool in his usual spot. “Maybe, yes,” Lee shouted through the phone.

“Okay, so what’s next?” Jesse asked as he considered panicking.

“I’ll touch it up and pass it along.” Lee sighed. “But Jesse, I need to tell you something. I’ve declined the project, personally. Brian says he understands, but I believe he’s angry. You know people in Hollywood, they don’t like to hear ‘no.’ Anyway, I think this has become a bake-off—I’ve heard a few other people are working on a script. Don’t get your hopes up.”

Well, I’ve got some other things going on now,” Jesse said.

“Yes, I hope you’ve been enjoying the day-job or whatever it’s called nowadays,” Lee said.

“I have, actually,” Jesse said.

“Because it’s harder to get you a shitty job than it is a good one, somehow,” Lee said.

“So get me a good job,” Jesse said, testing his confidence.

“Bravo!” Lee yelled again. “All in time. Good luck later, and remember less is more, always. Trust no critic,” Lee said. “And how’s your sobriety through all this?” He put pressure on the word.

“She’s not a critic. She’s a reporter,” Jesse said, suddenly put on the defensive, slipping the question entirely.

“I’m so sorry to hear that,” Lee said.
